Biography
Hao Zi Yoh, a highly accomplished pianist hailing from Malaysia, has been immersed in the world of music since the tender age of 3. Aged 12, she had already performed at the prestigious Carnegie Hall as a gold medallist of the Bradshaw and Buono International Piano Competition. Hao Zi's most recent achievements include her debut at Kings Place as an Artist of the Kirckman Concerts and an appearance on BBC Radio 3 In Tune.
Hao Zi's unwavering passion has taken her across the globe, and she has performed as a soloist in festivals around Europe, USA, China, Japan, and Malaysia. Her exceptional talent has been recognised with top prizes in many international competitions, including EPTA Belgium, Enschede, RNCM James Mottram (Manchester, 2012), and Concurso internacional de piano Rotary Club Palma Ramon LLull, Mallorca (Spain 2013). Hao Zi has also had the privilege of performing with esteemed orchestras such as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Nova Amadeus and Baleares Symphony Orchestra, and has appeared on BBC Radio Berkshire and Scala Radio.
Hao Zi's musical journey has been shaped by the guidance of her mentors, including Chong Lim Ng, who introduced her to the world of classical music in Malaysia. Hao Zi's passion for music has also led her to explore composing, and her composition "Bustling City and Peaceful Suburb" was selected to represent Malaysia at the Yamaha APJOC concert 2007. At the age of 14, Hao Zi moved to Germany to study with Prof. Elza Kolodin at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, where she continued to hone her craft.
Hao Zi's musical journey has been marked by a deep curiosity and a desire to explore new sounds and techniques. In 2014, she came under the tutelage of Christopher Elton during her studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Hao Zi collaborated with percussionist Daniel Gonzalez to create a version of Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit for Piano and Percussion. She also included improvised extended piano techniques and improvised singing in her interpretation of "A Distant Voice of the Rainforest" by Chong Lim Ng, which drew the audience into the soundworld of a rainforest. In 2022, she received full scholarship to study under Martino Tirimo at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
Hao Zi's love for music extends beyond her own performances, and she has been involved in numerous outreach projects. She has performed in Music for Moment Concerts at the Wigmore Hall, which were led by the Open Academy for children and elderly with Dementia. Hao Zi has also collaborated with author-illustrator David Litchfield and improvised to his storytelling of the award-winning book "The Bear and the Piano".
Despite her many achievements, Hao Zi remains grounded and committed to giving back to the community. She has given talks, performances, and masterclasses to the students of University of Malaya, Bentley Music, and Persatuan Chopin, in the hope of sharing her experiences and helping the younger generation. During the Covid-19 lockdown, Hao Zi held an online livestream and fundraiser for St. Nicholas' Home for the Blind, Penang, Malaysia.
A Young Steinway Artist, Hao Zi has performed in venues such as Wigmore Hall, Southbank Royal Festival Hall, Salle Cortot, Steinway Hall London, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (Malaysia), and Teatro Quirino (Italy). Hao Zi is further developing her performing career as part of the Keyboard Trust London and Talent Unlimited. She is also a piano tutor at King's College London and gives masterclasses at Imperial College London.
